Hedwig, Part 3

by Julia

Since Hedwig’s original gender transformation wasn’t inspired by his/her own desire to become a woman, what gender would you consider him/her, if any? What gender do you think Hedwig considers him/herself, if any?

Does the fact that it’s an Angry Inch, or that (s)he discusses it as something (s)he “has to work with”, hint at a possible discontentment with her ambiguous position?

There seems to be an overarching theme of union and division–with Hedwig and Tommy’s relationship, genitalia, the Berlin wall, Adam and Eve.  How do these themes serve to open the discussion of identity and the dichotomies associated with it?
